Recognizing 2026 Rhapsody Physician Award nominee: Dr. Mohammed Abduljabbar Tawfeeq
Community: Bow Island
An internationally trained family physician who stepped in when physician shortages were prevalent in his newfound community is being celebrated.
Bow Island’s Dr. Mohammed Abduljabbar Tawfeeq was recently nominated for a 2026 Rhapsody Physician Award.
“Having practised medicine under dangerous conditions in Iraq and later Libya, Dr. Tawfeeq was grateful to be in a safe, welcoming community and quickly dedicated himself to serving the community,” writes Bow Island Mayor Gordon Reynolds in his nomination.
“He is a humble man and his kindness and professionalism right from the start has earned him a tremendous amount of respect and support. This was very evident a year later when a large contingent of locals attended the citizenship ceremony where Dr. Tawfeeq took the oath and became a proud Canadian citizen.”
Dr. Tawfeeq arrived in Bow Island nine years ago and focuses on preventative medicine and health promotion, evidence-based medicine, and integration of the latest research combined with his clinical expertise for people of all stages, says Reynolds.
The communities of Bow Island, the County of Forty Mile, and Village of Foremost are grateful for Dr. Tawfeeq’s dedication.
“Our community has grown quite rapidly and has enough [of a] patient panel for five doctors,” says Reynolds, noting Dr. Tawfeeq has been instrumental in filling the gap following several recent physician departures.
“His dedication to the people of our community has been admirable, even heroic.”
The recipients of the 2026 Rhapsody Awards will be announced on May 20, 2026!
