The RhPAP Financial Incentive for Rural Staff Training (FIRST) program provides up to two weeks of financial support for practising rural Alberta physicians acquiring skills important to their community.
Rural medical staff may qualify for up to $3500 from RhPAP and may be used to provide honoraria for local physicians seeking training, honoraria for preceptors or presenters, and for appropriate travel expenses.
To be eligible to apply, applicants are required to be licensed in Alberta on either the General or Provisional – Conditional Practice register of the CPSA, and to be practising in a defined Alberta rural area (Alberta communities except Edmonton, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Devon, Leduc, Calgary, Airdrie).
Potential Qualifying FIRST Activities:
- Hosting CME special events: e.g. CARE course; Ultrasound; Casting workshops; Special speakers.
- Skill development for chosen members of medical staff: e.g. PICC line insertions; Fracture management.
- Leadership skills.
- Practice management skills.
- Conflict resolution training.
Applications will be reviewed from rural or regional medical staff and must have the signed support of 2 medical staff members, including the Zone Medical Staff Association president and/or the Community Medical Director.
Up to 4 applications will be supported per year. Preference will be given to training requests that are not well supported by conventional CME/CPD delivery models.

Funds will be distributed at the discretion of local medical staff and may be used to provide honoraria for local physicians seeking training, honoraria for preceptors or presenters and for appropriate travel expenses.
Medical staff organizations receiving funding must complete a report on the use of funds by the end of the fiscal year (March).
