Students studying several health-care disciplines are coming to Rocky Mountain House to discover the advantages of living and working in rural Alberta.
On October 13 and 14, Rocky Mountain House will host an RhPAP Health Professions Skills Weekend event, sponsored by the Rural Health Professions Action Plan (RhPAP), Rocky/Clearwater/Caroline Attraction and Retention Committee, and Alberta Health Services. Over 50 Medical, Nursing, Physiotherapy, and Respiratory Therapist students from the University of Calgary, Mount Royal University and Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (S.A.I.T.) will experience what it’s like to live and work in the Rocky Mountain House area.
On Saturday, local health-care professionals will introduce students to the broad range of skills health professionals in rural communities are expected to use every day, including intubation, IV starts, suturing, spontaneous vaginal delivery, physiotherapy, EMS, and a STARS Mobile Education unit simulation.
RhPAP Skills Events also provide rural Alberta communities with an opportunity to make a positive impression on future health-care professionals through showcasing local amenities and attractions. Following a busy day of skills training, students will be treated to a community supper and social event with a traditional Metis theme at Highwater House, located within the Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site. On Sunday, participants will tour Crimson Lake Provincial Park, where they will learn outdoor survival skills and engage in an indigenous art project.
RhPAP Skills events, including Skills Days and Skills Weekends for high school and post-secondary students, are sponsored by the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and are scheduled in rural Alberta communities throughout the year by the RhPAP Rural Community Consultant team.
