Alberta Rural Health Week, held from May 27 to 31, 2024, was a vibrant celebration of the unsung heroes of rural healthcare. Organized by RhPAP, this annual event shone a spotlight on the dedicated healthcare providers and community volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure accessible, high-quality healthcare in Alberta’s rural regions.
Honouring Our Healthcare Champions
Throughout the week, communities across Alberta came together to honour the invaluable contributions of their healthcare professionals. RhPAP’s social media channels buzzed with heartfelt stories and profiles of the 2024 Rhapsody Award Nominees — exceptional healthcare providers who have made a profound impact on their communities. These profiles not only celebrated seasoned professionals but also highlighted the six 2024 Rural Medical School Award recipients — the next generation of medical students committed to rural practice.
Equally important were the tributes to local volunteers. These unsung heroes support healthcare providers in countless ways, from organizing community health events to providing essential logistical support. Their dedication and hard work ensure that healthcare services in rural Alberta remain robust and responsive to the needs of the community.
Rural Health Week Recognized by Minister of Health
RhPAP was proud to receive an official declaration from the Minister of Health Adriana LaGrange marking May 27 to 31 as Alberta Rural Health Week. In a corresponding letter, LaGrange says, “The week is a great opportunity to raise awareness about health issues faced by rural Albertans and highlight programs that improve health outcomes in communities.”
Community Celebrations Across Alberta
One of the highlights of Alberta Rural Health Week was the series of community events that took place across the province, bringing a unique local flavour to the festivities.
In the Northeast Zone, Barrhead held a lively BBQ on May 30, while Athabasca’s community BBQ on May 31 brought everyone together to appreciate their healthcare heroes. Mayerthorpe hosted BBQs over three days at various healthcare facilities. Whitecourt delivered gift baskets to all healthcare facilities and clinics, and Smoky Lake sweetened the week with hand-delivered cookies for healthcare staff. Bonnyville recognized its healthcare staff at the Community Board BBQ with cake, social media messages, and e-cards.
The Northwest Zone celebrated with Slave Lake’s EMS Appreciation and Rural Health Week BBQ, Manning’s hand-delivered cookies, and Smoky River Region’s ice cream bar appreciation events. Grimshaw and Fairview’s hand-delivered treats and appreciation BBQs, respectively, added to the joyous atmosphere. Sexsmith and surrounding areas, including Beaverlodge, Hythe, and Wembley, celebrated with an appreciation BBQ for the staff of Pearson Place, while Peace River hosted an appreciation BBQ outside the hospital.
The West Central Zone saw Sundre awarding long-service appreciation and a BBQ on May 28, while Edson’s Healthcare Hero appreciation barbecue and official proclamation on May 29 were notable highlights. Rimbey’s tailgate barbecue on May 31 and Rocky Mountain House’s series of events from May 28 to June 1 kept the community spirit high.
The East Central Zone was vibrant with Blackfalds’ cookie and tea baskets and restaurant gift cards for healthcare professionals. Castor’s Rural Health Celebration Evening and BBQ, Drumheller’s BBQ, and Flagstaff County’s Mental Health Summit Evening underscored community spirit. Provost, Stettler, Tofield, Ryley, Beaver County West, Vegreville, Viking, Wainwright, and Wetaskiwin each found unique ways to celebrate, from delivering muffins, flowers, and ice cream coupons to hosting BBQs and appreciation posters by local students.
In the South Zone, Claresholm’s monthly staff gift card draw and baked goods delivered to the hospital added a personal touch. Milk River held gift card draws throughout the week, Picture Butte delivered local bakery donuts, and Vulcan hosted various appreciation events, including a gift card draw and staff profile highlights.

The spirit of Alberta Rural Health Week extends beyond these five days. RhPAP encourages everyone to continue showing their support for rural healthcare providers and volunteers. Let’s continue to recognize and celebrate the incredible work of our rural healthcare heroes. Their dedication ensures that even in the most rural and remote areas, Albertans have access to the healthcare they need.
