Dr. Debbie Dehlen
Community: Lac La Biche
A long-time physician from Lac La Biche is being recognized for tackling the challenges of rural medicine and her commitment to leading by example.
Dr. Debbie Dehlen was recently nominated for her two decades of practise in the northeastern community.
The Rhapsody Physician Award recognizes the contributions of rural physicians, especially those unsung heroes who provide Alberta rural communities with outstanding patient care and make notable contributions to medical practice and to their communities.
“Dr. Dehlen’s leadership within the healthcare team has fostered a collaborative and supportive environment, ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to all patients,” Lisa Sparks writes in her letter of support as the site manager for Lac La Biche and Smoky Lake Healthcare Centres.
“Her commitment to staying abreast of the latest medical advancements reflects her dedication to providing the best possible healthcare services to the rural population.”
Nicole Yackimec, a registered nurse from Lac La Biche Health Centre, has worked alongside Dr. Dehlen for 20 years.
“I’ve worked with many physicians … but Dr. Dehlen stands out in her field. She is the consummate professional who approaches her craft with dignity, knowledge, reliance and character.
“She never forgets that she is a service provider to a community that is uniquely challenged by the pace of change it faces every day.”
Candace Cadieux, a fellow church parishioner, says Dr. Dehlen was instrumental in establishing a well-regarded coffee time at the church, among taking on other volunteer positions.
She notes that Dr. Dehlen regularly follows up with patients who have been moved to another facility and how she always greets “others with a smile, even on a busy day in emergency.”
