In addition to the Rural Education and Advanced Learning (REAL) Program and the Team-based Learning Initiative, RhPAP offers several other continuing professional development opportunities for which rural Albertan health professionals and teams are eligible. These opportunities support health professionals maintain and enhance existing skills or gain new skills in order to meet the health-care needs of their community and surrounding areas.

Courses

Emergency Department Echo (EDE) Point-of-Care Ultrasound Course

Since 2001, the EDE Course has been taught over to more than 15,000 health-care providers. Its use has become the standard of care in large trauma centres, remote settings, and everything in between. RhPAP is partnered with Dr. Ray Wiss, creator of the EDE Course, to bring this course to physicians, physician assistants, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, midwives, and other allied health professionals in rural Alberta communities.

General Emergency Medicine Skills (GEMS) Course

GEMS is an online, multimedia emergency-skills training experience with a hands-on component provided via a STARS Human Patient Simulation Session. GEMS modules help rural physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and physician assistants upgrade their emergency medical skills. Online modules may be completed from work or at home.

Programs & Webinars

Financial Incentive for Rural Staff Training (FIRST) Program

Is there training that would benefit your rural health-care team, but no other program provides funding for it? Rural teams of two or more health professionals from at least two of Alberta’s regulated health professions, can apply for up to $5,000 to host a training event in their rural community.

This information series explores health-related organizations connected to rural Alberta that influence or play a part in health-care delivery in rural Alberta.

The learning series offers workshop-type events focused on sharing strategies, tools, and techniques with rural communities that will help enhance rural community capacity for local initiatives and projects including those related to health workforce attraction and retention. These sessions are typically presented in cooperation with educational partners like the Campus for Communities of the Future and the Tamarack Institute.
