Rachelle Berube, French Health Coordinator for Alberta Health Services in McLennan, Alberta and Jacqueline Graham, a student in the Bilingual Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at the University of Alberta, talk about the importance of having bilingual healthcare workers in rural Alberta.
The interviews were conducted as part of an RPAP Skills Event held in the northern Alberta communities of McLennan, Falher, and Girouxville.
With a large francophone population, there is a need for doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers who speak both French and English. Berube’s position was created to address this need throughout the North Zone, coordinating translation and acting as a liaison between patients and healthcare workers.
For the RPAP Skills Event, students such as Graham in the Bilingual Bachelor of Science in Nursing program were brought to see first-hand where their unique skills could be put to use.
