Rural medicine brings new challenges daily, and that works for Dr. Murtaza Amirali. Dr. Amirali, a family medicine resident physician with the Rural Alberta South branch of the Alberta Rural Family Medicine Network, spoke to RPAP in 2014 about why he chose rural family medicine.
According to Dr. Amirali, the diversity of rural practise, and the opportunity to do things he couldn’t do in the city as a specialist, sold him on rural medicine.
“What I realized is I enjoyed talking to people, getting to know people, switching roles, being in obstetrics to neo-natal resuscitation to going to the [Operating Room], you can do all these in one day – you need a diverse set of skills.”
“I think at the end of the day when I look back that’s what actually sold me. As much I loved learning from the specialists … I actually felt like I was a good physician in the rural setting.”
