Fifty students from several healthcare disciplines will have a unique opportunity this weekend to discover the advantages of living and working in rural northern Alberta.
Medical students from the RPAP-supported Rural Medical Interest Group of the University of Alberta, Nursing and Physiotherapy students from the University of Alberta, and Respiratory Therapy students from NAIT will experience a busy weekend of skills training at an RPAP Medical Skills Weekend event, taking place in Fort Vermillion, High Level and La Crete over the weekend of 21-22 March 2015.
The Medical Skills Weekend event–sponsored by RPAP | Health Workforce for Alberta in partnership with Alberta Health Services–will enable students to learn basic skills from local healthcare professionals while learning more about each other’s scope of practice.
Students will be challenged in three medical skills competitions, taking place at St. Theresa Hospital in Ft. Vermillion, La Crete Advanced Ambulatory Care Centre and Northwest Health Centre in High Level over the two-day period. Participants will also experience local culture and cuisine. Students will be treated to cross-country skiing at Rocky Lane Nordic Ski Club; lunch at Heimstaed Lodge in La Crete, a Community Celebration in High Level.
Medical Skills Weekends are arranged by the RPAP Medical Students’ Initiative Coordinator and are scheduled throughout the year in rural Alberta communities. To learn more about Medical Skills Weekends, click here.
