RPAP recently teamed up with the Professional Association of Resident Physicians of Alberta to help resident physicians get a head start on their transition to practice.
Throughout February and March, Transition to Practice 101 & Recruitment Fair events were conducted at venues in Calgary, Edmonton and Red Deer. These evening events consisted of short, handy sessions on relevant transition-to-practice topics including licensing, credentialing, and contracts.
“We’re trying to bundle some key information to help them transition from being a learner to a practising physician, and also give them an opportunity to meet with local recruiters about the opportunities that exist in Alberta,” says David Kay, RPAP Executive Director.
Residents physicians, many from the RPAP-sponsored Alberta Rural Family Medicine Network, received the opportunity to talk to recruiters and stakeholders involved in different aspects of this transition; and to become familiar with resources that are available to resident physicians making the transition to practice.
According to Dr. Stephen Annand, a family medicine resident from the Rural Alberta North program in Red Deer, Transition to Practice also provides an opportunity to learn more about Alberta communities where residents may be looking to practice.
“A lot of people are bringing families out to these places, and we want to know what’s out there.”
