Dr. Keith Martin came to Slave Lake in 2012 to work in one of three Family Care Clinics currently operating within the province. The deciding factors for Dr. Martin in coming north were the team approach employed at Slave Lake, and the collaborative model involving nurse practitioners.
While nurse practitioners are not physicians, Dr. Martin says they do a lot of what a physician do, which works well in a rural environment.
“It’s like you’re working with a high-level resident, so you don’t have to teach them everything, you’re there to help,” says Dr. Martin.
“You’re there to assist your there to kind of say hey, this is my approach to the problem, this is what I would probably do, and they roll with it, and it’s great.”
