The Simulated Office Orals (SOOs) are the oral component of the Certification Examination of The College of Family Physicians of Canada, designed to evaluate the diverse knowledge, attitudes, and skills required by practising family physicians.
In the SOOs, candidates are expected to explore patients’ feelings, ideas, and expectations about their situation, and to identify the effect of these on function.
Scenarios are selected to represent a variety of clinical situations in which communication skills are particularly important in understanding patients and assisting them with their problems.
Dr. Adam Hrdlicka, a family physician from Innisfail, and Dr. Carly Crewe, now a practising physician in Sundre, discuss their participation in the SOOs as part of the Rural Alberta North program of the Alberta Rural Family Medicine Network.
