U of Alberta students learn what it’s like to be a health provider in a rural northern Alberta community
Health providers from the Lac La Biche region will teach over 25 students from the University of Alberta nursing and physiotherapy departments basic health-care skills at an upcoming skills weekend in Lac La Biche, Alberta on March 6-8, 2020. The weekend offers participants an interactive, skills-based introduction to working in rural Alberta as part of a multidisciplinary rural health-care team. Students can speak with instructors about health-related careers in the community, and the educational requirements for specific careers in health care. The intent of the post-secondary skills weekend is to encourage future health-care providers to consider a career in rural Alberta, and learn about the local opportunities available. Students also receive a taste of the local culture, with tours of Lac La Biche attractions, and a “comfort cabin” camping experience at Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park. On Sunday, participants will attend the Plamondon Cabane a Sucre festival, and visit Tree de la Vie Midwifery.
