Students from Sundre and Cremona high schools to learn essential nursing skills at May 7 event
Sundre and Cremona high school students will receive an introduction to nursing in a rural hospital at a May 7 nursing skills event, sponsored by the Rural Health Professions Action Plan (RhPAP), Alberta Health Services (AHS), and the Sundre Healthcare Professionals Attraction and Retention Committee (SHPARC).
Local registered nurses will introduce about 50 students from grades 10 to 12 to the broad range of skills that nurses in rural communities are expected to use every day, including suturing, starting an IV, and giving an injection. Local physician, and RHPAP Board of Directors member, Dr. Rob Warren, will also be on hand to address students during an RhPAP-sponsored lunch.
The nursing skills event is part of Sundre’s National Nursing Week (May 7-13) celebrations and is intended to celebrate and showcase the skills of local nurses, while making a positive impression on prospective student nurses.
Flashback to last year:
RhPAP Skills events, including Skills Days and Skills Weekends for high school and post-secondary students, are sponsored by the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and are scheduled in rural Alberta communities throughout the year by the RhPAP Rural Community Consultant team.

Established in 1991 by the Government of Alberta as the Alberta Rural Physician Action Plan, a renewed Rural Health Professions Action Plan, or RhPAP, is transitioning from a rural physician support program to a rural allied health professionals and community development agency. Our vision is to help rural Alberta have and sustain the right number of rural health practitioners in the right places, offering the right services, through community and professional development programs, services, and evidence- informed advocacy. We are grateful to Alberta Health for its continued financial support.
