Rural Physician Locum program

We provide funding that enables AMA Physician Locum Services to offer short-term locum coverage for family physicians practising in rural Alberta. This support helps physicians take planned time away from practice while ensuring communities continue to receive essential care.

Locum support is available for:

• Weekend coverage in communities with fewer than four physicians
• Weekend coverage for senior physicians (aged 55+ with more than nine years of rural Alberta practice) in communities with fewer than 16 physicians
• Limited summer coverage, with a maximum of two weeks per physician to help manage high seasonal demand

Communities experiencing critical physician shortages may receive additional consideration for locum coverage, subject to availability.
