Mentor The Next Generation of Physicians

Share your expertise, experiences, practice, and rural community with medical students in Alberta as a Rural Mentorship preceptor. Get them excited about rural medicine before they have to start making decisions about clerkship and residency.

Do you cover weekend, daytime emergency shifts in a small rural community? Are you open to having a first- or second-year medical student shadow you for six hours on any of these shifts? If the answer is yes, we need you to help us champion rural medicine to the next generation of physicians.

If you’re interested in becoming a preceptor, please email mentorship@rhpap.ca for more information.

Showcase the best in rural Healthcare across Alberta

Our Rural Mentorship Experiences connect medical students with rural physician preceptors for hands-on, real-world exposure to rural practice in Alberta.

The program aims to facilitate opportunities for students to explore rural medicine and make an informed decision about whether a rural career is a fit for them while offering you the chance to make a substantial contribution to Alberta by promoting your community, your practice, and the rewards of rural medicine to the next generation of physicians.

As a physician preceptor, you will receive an honorarium to recognize your time and effort and your participation is designed to be flexible and low administration.

"It's so much fun to get learners in the (Emergency) department, and be able to go back to the basics and think about why you are doing things the way that you are. Sometimes, I catch myself and think, 'Why am I doing it this way?' I've definitely had learners pick up tidbits from other preceptors that I can learn from as well."
