Build Up Your Skills To Strengthen Rural Care
The Physician Skills Enrichment Grant program helps you expand your skills through flexible and relevant training opportunities. By reducing your financial barrier, you can focus on delivering high-quality care where it matters most.Â
Funding is available for learning experiences ranging from single-day courses to extended training of up to 52 weeks.
Program Details and Requirements
The program is designed for physicians committed to rural Alberta, including:
- Physicians who have lived and practised in a rural Alberta community for at least 12 months
- Long-term locum physicians with 24 months of service in the same rural community (considered individually)
- Community-based rural physicians (considered individually)
Rural communities are defined as those with fewer than 15,000 residents and located outside the Calgary and Edmonton Census Metropolitan Areas.

Eligibility Requirements
To apply, you must:
- Hold active Alberta licensure and be in good standing
- Be willing to commit to a return of service following training
- Apply for training that aligns with clearly defined learning objectives
For longer programs, additional documentation such as an updated CV or a letter of support from your Zone Medical Director may be required to confirm community need and readiness to support the new skills in practice.
Funding is intended to support learning time, not clinical service delivery, and is available for upcoming training or training that has started within the last 90 days.
Physicians are responsible for applying and registering for their training program, along with arranging any logistical support (including preceptors) needed to pursue the training.
If you have questions about applying for a Physician Skills Enrichment grant or identifying suitable training opportunities, please email physicians@rhpap.ca.
