The RESIDE Program

Live, work and thrive in rural medicine.

Apply for a financial benefit of up to $120,000 and experience the rewarding lifestyle that working as a physician in rural Alberta offers.

RESIDE is open to all physicians who have completed a family medicine residency program in Canada within the last five years.

RESIDE is also open to second year Family Medicine Residents, and those in an R3 specialty program.

Please note that the application deadline for The RESIDE Program is March 31, 2024.

Apply for RESIDE

Step 1: Explore eligible communities

There are dozens or eligible rural communities in Alberta actively looking for family medicine physicians.

Learn more about RESIDE eligible communities.

Step 2: Apply for a family medicine position

Go to the Alberta Health Services Doctor Jobs Alberta website. Find and apply for a family physician position in a RESIDE eligible rural community. Once you’ve applied for a position go to Step 3. You do not have to wait until you receive a job offer from Alberta Health Services.

Step 3: Apply for RESIDE

Complete the application for the RESIDE Program.

RESIDE Community Levels 

Level I Communities

Generally, Level 1 communities are more remote. Successful participants who elect to go to any of these communities will receive $80,000 for a two-year return-of-service term or $120,000 for a three-year return-of-service term. 

Level II Communities

Successful participants who elect to go to any of these communities will receive $45,000 for two years return of service or $80,000 for three years return of service.

RESIDE Program Selection Process

AHS is responsible for the interview and recruitment of physicians for the posted positions. RhPAP works with AHS to identify successful applicants who are eligible for the RESIDE Program.

Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their job application by AHS while RhPAP will provide information on the applicant’s RESIDE application afterwards. Successful applicants will be offered positions by AHS in the community that the applicant identified during the application process.
