Future healthcare professionals are coming to “The Land of the Mighty Moose” to discover the advantages of living and working in a rural Alberta community. On 26-28 May 2017, the northwestern Alberta town of Manning will host 40 post-secondary students studying several healthcare disciplines—including medicine, nursing, and physiotherapy—at an weekend Medical Skills event sponsored by the Alberta Rural Physician Action Plan (RPAP), Alberta Health Services, and the Manning Physician Attraction and Retention Coalition, representing both the Town of Manning and the County of Northern Lights

Local health care professionals from Manning Community Health Centre will introduce participants to the broad range of skills health professionals in rural communities are expected to use every day, including suturing, casting, and intravenous (IV) starts. STARS Air Ambulance Mobile Simulation Unit will also be present to run participants through several simulated healthcare scenarios.
RPAP Skills events provide rural Alberta communities with a unique opportunity to make a positive impression on future healthcare professionals through showcasing local amenities and attractions. Students will experience the best of local culture at a community barbeque hosted by local businesses and the Manning Physician and Attraction Coalition, with beef to be sourced from the farm of Dr. Tyler May. The region’s abundant resources will also be on display when students tour a farm in Hawk Hills, and if time permits, Manning Forest Products.
RPAP Skills events provide rural Alberta communities with a valuable opportunity to make a positive impression on future healthcare professionals through showcasing local amenities and attractions. Skills events, including Skills Days and Skills Weekends, are sponsored by the Alberta Rural Physician Action Plan, and are scheduled in rural Alberta communities throughout the year by the RPAP Health Professions Students’ Initiatives Coordinator.

Since 1992, the Alberta Rural Physician Action Plan (RPAP) has supported Alberta’s rural and remote communities, providing an evolving variety of strategies supporting the successful attraction and retention of physicians, within a constantly changing healthcare environment. A recent review by the Ministry of Health will see RPAP’s mandate evolve once more, expanding beyond physicians to provide support services to other health professions, such as nurses and nurse practitioners, occupational and physical therapists, midwives, and paramedics.
