2016 was the inaugural year for the annual RPAP Community Conference to be held in a rural Alberta community. Through a proposal process, the town of Vermilion, Alberta was chosen as the site for this year’s event.
The conference focused on identifying and sharing work that goes on behind the scenes, and contributes to the successes found through community involvement in physician attraction, support and retention. An initial keynote address and workshop helped set the stage for the two day event, emphasizing the importance of rural communities, and strategies to build attractive and resilient communities.
Participatory sessions offering practical approaches and strategies, sharing the benefits of collaboration, and providing examples of cross cultural work with aboriginal communities, all contributed to enhancing the support work carried out by rural Alberta attraction and retention committees.
