Recognizing 2026 Rhapsody Healthcare Heroes Award nominee: Barb Hawken and the Provost IDA team

Community: Provost

A pharmacy team from Provost is being recognized by its community for providing thoughtful, individualized patient care and ensuring health professionals have the information they require when they need it.

“In many cases, they know patient histories, medication journeys, and personal circumstances even better than the physicians do, and in a small town, those relationships matter,” writes Provost Mayor Dirk Brouwer, chairman of the Provost Health Care Professional Attraction and Retention Committee.

Brouwer, who on behalf of the committee nominated the pharmacy team for a 2026 RHPAP Rhapsody Healthcare Heroes Award, says thanks to the work of pharmacist Barb Hawken and her team at IDA Pharmacy “the transition from physician assessment to treatment is easy and seamless, and the overall efficiency of the healthcare system in our community is greatly enhanced.”

The team’s work reduces the impact on urgent care and physician workload by creating partnerships with the local primary care network and seniors’ lodge to manage vulnerable patients’ needs including the elderly and those with diabetes.

“The pharmacy team’s approach is an invaluable help to a range of other medical professionals in clarifying medications, adjusting dosages, or considering treatment alternatives,” he says.

“By making a patient’s healthcare journey one of community collaboration as opposed to institutional indifference, everyone involved benefits immeasurably.”

Brouwer says having a fully engaged pharmacy team is also instrumental for the community in attracting new physicians, healthcare staff and residents.

“As a critical component of community well being and viability, the IDA Pharmacy team represents the embodiment of what’s possible when collaboration and professional dedication intersect.”
